Hi! I’m going to give you some tips today for greater productivity as a writer. This is especially important for somebody like myself who is suffering from a disorder that affects my energy level, and I think a lot of us deal with that. It’s not just me. It’s having the energy to deal with so much information and stuff that’s going on today and things to do can be really wearing on a person. So here are a few productivity tips that will help you, I hope, with your writing.
Number two, set aside a time certain to write and nothing but write, and you have to pick this based on what works for you. I know that I write best in the afternoon, so I always set aside a portion of time twice a week to do nothing but write. And that can include revising your writing. Keep that in mind. But if you’re in the stage where you’re just trying to get something on the page, set aside time and just do that for however long you think you can manage it.
Number three, set a goal for yourself. Now your goal might not be the same as somebody else’s. I know there are people out there who do a thousand words a day or ten thousand words a day. I couldn’t possibly. So the point is, even if you only do a hundred words or one paragraph, you’re that much closer to completing something. You take a hundred words and multiply it by the number of times you do it throughout the year, and you’ll end up with a substantial something. May not be a whole novel, but maybe that’s not what you’re trying to write. If you write a novella or a short story or several short stories, you can do that by sitting down and just taking the time to do it.
Number four, be realistic about what you can accomplish within the time that you’ve allotted for writing. As I said, some people can do a thousand words just like that. Some of us have to have less ambitious goals, in terms of our word count or how much we’re able to write within a year, say. So if you’re realistic and you sit down and just do the job, you can get something done. You can be more productive.
Finally, pay attention to your body. I have no choice but to pay attention to my body.
My body is continually reminding me to pay attention to it, which is annoying as all get-out. But what you have to keep in mind is that you can only do so much. And it can be very productive to stop and simply meditate, take a nap—naps really contribute to productivity.
For now, I will just leave you with those tips. And, if you would, please let me know what questions you have, what subjects you’d like me to cover specifically, and if you could like and share this video, I’d really appreciate it, or if you don’t like it, let me know, too, for that matter.
Thank you very much, and I’ll talk to you later.
