Hi! I’m going to talk for a little bit today about preventing burnout. Here are just a few tips.
[00:00:10] 1. Learn to say no. Frankly there’s a lot of advice out there about how to succeed at various things and you simply can’t do every one of them. I have given up trying to master every single type of social media there is and some I just don’t use at all. So you have to make a decision about which ones are the most important to you. That’s what I’m talking about when I talk about intention and intentionality. You really just have to decide what’s the most important thing to you and what works. And sometimes that requires experimentation. But the point is you can’t do everything.
[00:00:57] 2. Take time to exercise. Even when I feel too tired, doing a little bit of exercise usually gives me more energy. So if you take time in your day to do a half hour of exercise, even if it’s just walking for 20 minutes, that’s fine. That’s great. It’s something and it helps you physically and mentally.
[00:01:34] 3. Make a list of your major projects and then pick the three most important ones to you. Break down the projects. If they’re major projects, they’re going to be completed in steps, right? You’re going to have an order to doing things. So just break them down into small components, and think about how long it would take for you to realistically complete that project, given the number of steps that are involved and the things you have to do. That’s part of what I do to help avoid burnout.
[00:02:12] I have a tendency to plan my day the day before. So that I know what I’m doing and when I should be doing it and that way things get done. But at a pace that’s manageable for me. And that’s what’s important. You have to decide what’s manageable for you.
[00:02:33] 4. Take breaks every now and then, and just be good to yourself. Be kind to yourself. Don’t beat yourself up. Don’t overwork yourself. Always remember to be kind to yourself. Otherwise, how are you going to be with others? You know, it’s not going to be good.
[00:02:57] 5. Reading and journaling. I find that reading and keeping a journal helped me a lot to avoid burnout. And with that I will just end with a quote from Marissa Mayer. “I have a theory that burnout is about resentment. And you beat it by knowing what it is you’re giving up that makes you resentful.”
[00:03:24] Pretty profound. Talk to you later.
